Another step in the right direction

A successful run for distance this morning.
Some gadget glitches with runmeter - I had to reset it 15 minutes into the run, because it was telling me I had been running for a day and a half - bizarre. Magellan tells the true story.

My original plan was to run 6 slow miles, slow enough that I didn't have to walk. Then, when I got there, I remembered the prudence of not changing more than one variable at a time. Increase my miles AND eliminate my walking? Not advisable. So, I opted to add mileage only. Even at 7:00am, the sun was about 20 degrees above the horizon, and it was very warm, very humid. The wind coming off the water cooled it some (it was 77 degrees when I parked at Cedar Creek) but as the sun rose over the course of the hour and a half I was there, it was really tough for me. I ended up running/walking 2:1 by the end. What's baffling to me is that I can no longer reach and maintain my 90 step cadence. I don't know if it's an endurance issue, or because my right leg is not moving as effectively as the left.

All in all, 8 miles, according to Magellan.
I'm happy with the distance, and glad that I'm able to get out there again.

  1. Yes! It is a great start. Shorten your stride. Take little steps. After I had those tight calves in April I did this...really concentrated on it. The cadence returned after a week or two.

    1. Thanks, Theresa! I'm trying real hard to stay positive and ease my way into it. ILY!

  2. Hats off to you for doing that mileage today. I went out 90 mins after you and it was oppressive. The saving grace was the tree cover on the trails. Cadence is tricky. If you are hitting your target pace, I wouldn't worry about cadence too much.

    1. Thanks, ER! I've got to remind myself not to get hung up on pace so soon into returning. I do NOT want to be sidelined again. I'll take running 2 minutes slower than not running at all!

  3. Something you said in toward the end of your post about having trouble keeping a 90 cadence brought to mind a post I wrote about a year ago. You may be over striding just a little. shortening your stride can help you maintain that 90 cadence even if it is just a tiny adjustment will make a big difference. Don't let the title fool you! http://runnersmania.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-to-increase-stride-length-and.html

    1. Great post, Russell..
This morning I was finally feeling my stride. I had looked into Chi running when I first started a year ago and was having knee pain. The shorter stride and metronome helped immensely. I've been out of running for 2 months because of a new issue, so I guess it was just a matter of time before I fell into rhythm again. Now, I just have to work on my endurance!
